The CTFC board was elected by local industry and currently comprises four fashion designers and eight industry players within the Clothing and Textile value chain including Media, Manufacturing, Retail, Education, Labour and Government representatives.

Alex, a UNISA graduate, previously worked for Woolworths for slightly more than 10 years. After which, he joined Foschini as a Planning Manager and has been with the group for the past 13 years. He is currently a Merchandise Director within the Foschini group.

Managing Director – Monviso
Ian is the Managing Director of Monviso Knitwear. He graduated with a BSc degree (UCT) before going abroad to study clothing technology and joining Monviso Knitwear, a member of the Seardel group, in 1976. Monviso is the largest knitwear manufacturer in South Africa and has been awarded a licence to sell Fifa 2010 clothing to retail outlets. He has been a board member and the Chairperson of the CTFC since the 2007/08 financial year.

BRYAN RAMKILAWAN

Cape Town Fashion Council
Bryan Ramkilawan, has served on the (CTFC) board for the past four years. His career in the fashion industry spans more than 20 years. He studied fashion design in KwaZulu-Natal and lectured in Creative Design and Computer Studies at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
Bryan was also a board member and trustee for the Shaun Borstrock Foundation for the Creative Industries, which fosters design partnerships between South Africa and the United Kingdom.
As one of the founding member of the CTFC in 2006, he served as vice-chairman and executive committee member in 2009 and 2010, and fashion academic chairman from 2008 to 2010.

ANITA DU PLOOY

Deputy Director: Clothing & Textiles, Provincial Government Western Cape
Anita has spent the last 21 years working in various areas of the Clothing & Textile Industry. Eight years have been spent in Manufacturing, two years have been spent in Retail as an Area Manager, nine years in Academia as a lecturer, Co-ordinator for the KZN Centre of Excellence for Clothing & Textiles as well as the HOD: Clothing & Textile Technology and two years in Clustering & Consulting. Having also jointly run a CMT factory, and with a Degree in Clothing Technology, Anita now manages the Clothing & Textile portfolio for the Department of Economic Development & Tourism (DEDT) within the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC).

Cheryl Arthur heads up one of the biggest design houses in South Africa and has successfully maintained it for the past 22 years. Cheryl also has an extensive amount of experience in design, manufacturing as well as retail. Hip Hop has seven outlets and stocks over 50 boutiques nationwide. Cheryl has been a board member of the CTFC since the 2007/08 financial year.

Abu-Bakr, also known as Baker to everyone in the industry, holds a diploma in Clothing Design and has over 20 years of industry experience. He is currently the designer/merchandiser for the top House of Monatic brands. As a key player at Monatic he is involved in all aspects of industry from textiles to manufacturing to design.

Jackie Burger is the editor of Elle magazine in South Africa. Her background includes having been a brand manager at Foschini, associate fashion editor for Fair Lady as well as a brand consultant for Lever Ponds. Jackie has also been a finalist in the fashion category of the 2001 and 2003 Mondi Paper Magazine Awards, and subsequently won this award in 2002. She is also a winner of the Most Innovative Style category, of the 2003 SA Style Awards.

SHAMIL ISAACS

Shamil started his career working in design and product development with mens and boys outer and underwear for companies such as Cashworths and Ackermans. He then started, and continued lecturing in Pattern and Garment Technology at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) for the next 10 years. After which, in 2002, he set up the Technology Station in Clothing and Textiles based at the CPUT campus in Bellville, Cape Town, to support the Clothing Textiles Sector and related industries with Innovation Support. Shamil currently lectures Product development and Innovation at the Technology Station and is also a Board member of the Cape Clothing Textile Cluster and CLOTEX.

Fachmy started his career in the Manufacturing sector in the early 90’s and started working for the Union at the beginning of the millennium. He currently works for SACTWU as the Coordinator for the Office of the General Secretary. Representing and addressing worker’s needs in the Industry forms part an integral part of Fachmy’s job, and achieving the goals set out for industry parameters to be adhered to, is the most rewarding to him.

Gavin Rajah has been Managing Director of Gavin Rajah Atelier since 2005. He is Managing Director and Joint Owner of Gavin Rajah Concept in Cape Town. Rajah is an Ambassador for UNICEF in South Africa as well as Managing Director for GRC: Event Concept, Management and Direction in Cape Town. His work has featured in international publications such as Milano Finanza, Icon, Luna, Avant Garde, Harper’s & Queen, Uomo collezioni, Donna Collezioni, London Sunday Times. He has also won awards such as SANS Directional Fashion Award | SOUTH AFRICAN NYLON SPINNERS.

Shaun works as an independent consultant to luxury brands and associations all round the globe. They have included Thomas Pink, Fortnum and Mason, Gucci, Dolce Gabbana.
Shaun has been actively involved in the fashion industry in South Africa, America and the UK. As a South African designer his collections were available in over 200 shops nationwide, he sold to Harrods, Harvey Nichols in the UK and Barneys in New York. Shaun was also a sponsor of Miss South Africa. Shaun maintains his links with South Africa working with the Cape Town Fashion Council. In addition his work as a stylist has been well documented, styling collections for the Sunday Times.
He is also the founder of the SHAUN BORSTROCK FOUNDATION FOR THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES. The organisation’s mission is to mentor, nurture and empower young learners and emerging designers within the creative industries in South Africa
